Chiefs Drop Final Leage Game

The Chiefs final regular season game was another close entertaining game with the Westman Wildcats in Shoal Lake on Wednesday Feb 8th.  With the playoffs looming, both teams wanted to end the seson on a high note.  The Chiefs opened the scoring early in the first as Karli Frederick slipped a seeing eye wrist shot into the Wildcats goal.  Cass Lyttle and Morgan Ramsay assisted on the goal.   Westman tied the game before a few minutes later as a puck popped loose in front of the net and was banged home over Tori Eilers in the Chiefs goal.  Less then a minute later, a two on one chance for the Wildcats ended up in the Chiefs goal and the first ended in a 2 - 1 lead for the visitors.  Both team would have offensive chances in the second and third but there would be no further scoring.  The Chiefs narrowly missed the tying goal at the midway point of the late in the second.  Karissa Cullum and Tatum Amy worked hard to kill a Chiefs penalty and had two chances to score, including a back hand from Tatum the hit the goalie in the top of the head as she sprawled on the ice.  The "puck luck" wasnt with the Chiefs this night as they would fail to tie the game and fell to a 2 - 1 loss.

The Chiefs end the regular season with a very good record of 19 wins and 8 losses, good for 4th place in the competitive MFMHL.  They will face the Eastman Selects in the first round of the playoffs with Game 1 going on Wednesday Feb 15th at 7:30 in Shoal Lake.  Game 3 will also be at the Communiplex in Shoal Lake on Sunday February 19th at 4:30 pm.

Chinook Classic Tournament - Edge School - Calgary

The Chiefs filled the bus with players, family and friends and trekked west to Calgary on February 1st to participate in the Chinook Classic Tournament at the Edge School in Calgary.  After a day of travel Wednesday, the Chiefs started the trip on Thursday with a tour of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with alumini Tashel Scantlebury and Emma Greenwood who attend SAIT and play for the Trojans.  A very informative discussion with Trojans coach Terry Larson and a tour of the facility was enjoyed by parents and players.

The Chiefs would play their first game of the tournament that afternoon as they faced a league rival in the Pembina Valley Hawks.    The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead in the game, carrying 3 -1 lead out of the first period on goals from Karissa Cullum, McKiya Mazur and Tatum Amy.  The lead was stretched to 4 - 1 in the second when Amy added her second, with the second ending with the Chiefs up 5 -2 after Cullum scored her second of the game. Unfortunately Pembina Valley scored twice in the third and the game ended in a tie at 5.

On Friday, the Chiefs toured Mount Royal University and their hockey facility which was again very informative, lead by Coach Scott Rivet.  An added bonus was team captain Tatum Amy signing on with the Cougars to attend Mount Royal beginning next season.  Friday afternoon saw Yellowhead facing the Rocky Mountain Raiders from Alberta in an afternoon match.  The Chiefs were down 2 0 after one period and the score stayed that way after two.  The Raiders would add two more in the third as the Alberta team played a fast paced physical game that the Chiefs would have to work hard to match the rest of the weekend.

An early Saturday morning game against the Edmonton Pandas and former Chief Sherry Bowles who is an assistant coach on the team had the girls playing a great game.   Each team would score once in the first and second period with the  Yellowhead markers coming from Sydnee Decorby and McKiya Mazur.  Edmonton scored in the first minute of the third and despite some good pressure from the Chiefs, the Pandas protected the lead to the end for a 3 - 2 win.

On Saturday afternoon, the Northern Alberta Xtreme were the Chiefs opponents and like the early game, the girls played a great game in a fast paced physical affair.  Jena Barscello and Tatum Amy scored in the second period for the Chiefs, but their opponents put up two in the first, one in the second and one more in the third for a 4 - 2 win.

The Chiefs record placed them against another Manitoba team, the Interlake Lightning on Sunday morning.   The long weekend had the girls ready for the bus ride home and they were quick to jump on the LIghtning, scoring 3 times in the first, 4 in the second and 8 in the third to post a 15 - 0 win.   The team boarded the bus and headed out for a snowy ride home.
